I thought that it was going to be a skunk from the title. 😉
😀 !
I want to plant some flowers in the front yard of my ex’s house to attract bees. Unfortunately, his gardener used Roundup on the grass near the flower bed, but my daughter and I found out and freaked out and so he got rid of the gardener. But this means I can’t plant food there. What would you suggest?
Aieeee!!! Can you do some container gardening away from the treated areas? Containers don’t take up much space and esp with ornamentals you don’t have to do anything too fancy. I even have this one pot of chives which keeps reseeding itself and the first bees of spring love its cheerful blooms. For me, the trickiest part with containers is getting the watering right. Small pots can be the hardest. Btw, not knowing the history of garden care at our present home (and does anyone ever know?), we do not eat directly out of the lawn at this point. And there’s (still) so much of it! Sigh. I wish you much luck!!!
I know. I was horrified. Thanks for the advice. I’ll look for onrnamentals. Good idea about the containers! I love the purple chive flowers (and the fact that chives are perennials) and glad the bees like them too 🙂
I hear you. Who knows what went on in that yard! I told my daughter we need to get the soil tested.
I’m a big believer in soil testing, no matter where you live. Check out your local land grant college to see what they offer. UC Davis, of course, is a big ag university up your way. Well, closer to Sacto but you know what I mean. Or maybe SLO? Would think there are a number of community growers you also could tap in Oakland/Berkeley/SF–good luck & thanks for thinking of the beeeeeeeeez! (And, yup, I’m a former CA gal!)
Thanks. We have a little CSA where I live and I’ll ask the woman who heads it. She’ll know.
Where are you from in CA?
Not born there but lived in LA area for almost 25 years. Still feel pretty Californian most days. 🙂
You would after 25 years there 🙂
great picture + it gets to the point! You know I found them sleeping in the flowers last summer at night,It really was sweet. They are just bundles of joy! The other day seeing my two neighbors chatting with their “posion” sprayers in hand made me even more determined to provide a “bee sancturary”…:-)
Are there any local groups where you could promote awareness about this issue? I really think it comes down to old habits and lack of knowledge about how to care for things without buying some heavily advertised/industrially-produced one-off “solution”. As with the dandelions, we’ve lost an ability to see what the problem is–minimal, really, in the grand scheme of things–and how to create strategies without drastic side-effects. Good luck!!!
bee “sanctuary”…lol
*not* too strong a word, btw! the beeeeez thank u!!! 🙂
We have several nests of these little beauties! The baby bumbles are so adorable.
I’ve never seen baby bees…u r so lucky!!!
Oh my goodness they really are cute! So tiny!
Bees sure are cute (& so important!) but this poor fellow didn’t make it. Sigh. 😦
